What is intimate partner violence?

Intimate partner violence (domestic violence) is physical, sexual, psychological, and/or financial abuse caused by a partner or spouse.

Intimate partner violence can affect anyone regardless of race, gender, religion, marital status, socio-economic status, or education. African American women, however, suffer abuse at the hands of their partners at disproportionately higher rates.

Intimate partner violence is a crime that may result in serious injury, hospitalization, and/or death.

Abusers use fear, threats, isolation, psychological intimidation, manipulation, withholding sex, financial restrictions, and more to maintain power and control over their partners.

Most people who abuse their partners also abuse their children.

INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE IS EVERYONE'S BUSINESS.  LET'S BREAK THE SILENCE.
